Covet (Novel of the Fallen Angels #1)- J.R Ward

Synopsis:

Redemption isn’t a word Jim Heron knows much about-his specialty is revenge, and to him, sin is all relative. But everything changes when he becomes a fallen angel and is charged with saving the souls of seven people from the seven deadly sins. And failure is not an option.

Vin DiPietro long ago sold his soul to his business, and he’s good with that-until fate intervenes in the form of a tough-talking, Harley-riding, self-professed savior. And then he meets a woman who will make him question his destiny, his sanity, and his heart-and he has to work with a fallen angel to win her over and redeem his own soul.

Review:

I really enjoyed this book.  I thought that the storyline was original and well thought out.  There were only a couple things that I wish were different: 1.  It took me over 40 pages to get into it and I really had to push myself, but once I did, I was hooked.  2.  There really wasn’t any clear descriptions of the characters (if there was, I totally missed it) which made it very hard to picture anyone.

Keep in mind this is only the first book so I am only going off what I have read so far…the formula for this SEEMS to be that each book will be a new set of characters, except for the main fallen angels and demons.  I don’t know how I feel about that since you spend an entire book falling for the “victim/s”, for lack of a better word, only to leave them behind in the end.

It is a relatively fast paced book which makes it an easy read although it is long (at least to me it was…it took me 2 days to finish), 482 pages.

I would recommend to adults who like paranormal/fallen angel/supernatural romance books.  There is pervasive language and sex.

Review:

Ok, so it took me awhile to read all of this book.  I am not sure why, I just couldn’t get into it.  First off, it is written in the third person (which I really have a hard time with).  Although the use of this mode of narration is very handy because you get to feel ALL characters feelings and hear their thoughts but that also cause the book to jump around A LOT.  It didn’t just jump around at each chapter, it jumps at random points and it makes it a little hard to follow.

The way it jumps around makes it hard for me to convey the pace of the book as well because some of the jumps happen in the past and some jump to another character who has some “down time”.

Another thing that bothered me was how the angels/nephilim could talk to animals.  I know that seems like such a small thing but it really felt like I was reading Dr. Doolittle, maybe that was just me but it kind of felt cheesy.  I really wanted this to be fantastic, the cover is what grabbed my attention.

Even after reading the first book I am still not sure what the arc of the story is.

I love fallen angel stories but this one just did not grab me.  I will try to continue the series but I make no promises.  I hate not finishing a series but reading one that takes me days and days to complete each book is like torture.

Wicked Kiss (Nightwatchers #2) – Michelle Rowen

Synopsis:

My kiss can kill.

I used to be ordinary Samantha Day, but that’s changed. Now, after one dark kiss from a dangerous boy, I can steal someone’s soul…or their life. If I give in to the constant hunger inside me, I hurt anyone I kiss. If I don’t…I hurt myself.

Bishop is the one whose kiss I crave most, but if I kiss him, I’ll kill him. Then there’s another boy, one I can’t hurt. One whose kiss seems to miraculously quell my hunger. They’re both part of a team of angels and demons that’s joined forces in my city to fight a mysterious rising darkness, an evil that threatens everyone I know and love. I just wonder if I’ll be able to help Bishop—or if I’m just another part of the darkness he’s sworn to destroy….

May Contain Spoilers

This series is not your typical fallen angel series, it is not the forbidden type of relationship that you normally see.  Don’t get me wrong, there are consequences but not like what you expect.

I enjoyed the mind-melds in this book and there were a lot more of them.  I liked being able to get into “Bishop’s” head and I also loved the fact that you get to know more about his past.  There are a lot of questions answered in this book which is good that it was mapped out as a duology since there are no plans for a 3rd (but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen).

I really enjoyed this series.  The story arc is tightly worked and is beautifully written.  It was a page turner for me.  The only thing that I wish could have been different was the triangle between “Sam”, “Bishop” and “Kraven”.  There was always, in the back of my mind, the feeling that there should have been more emotion between “Sam” and “Kraven”.  I WISHED there would have been a bigger connection between “Sam” and “Kraven”.  I know triangles take alot of work to get them just right and it didn’t really work in this case.  That was the only disappointment for me.

The pace is very fast in this book and a lot happens.  It is full of romance, deceit, action and mystery.  I wish the story could go on in a 3rd book.  Don’t get me wrong, it ends beautifully but another adventure would be fun 🙂

Torment (Fallen #2) – Lauren Kate

Synopsis:

Hell on earth.

That’s what it’s like for Luce to be apart from her fallen angel boyfriend, Daniel.

It took them an eternity to find one another, but now he has told her he must go away. Just long enough to hunt down the Outcasts – immortals who want to kill Luce. Daniel hides Luce at Shoreline, a school on the rocky California coast with unusually gifted students: Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans.

At Shoreline, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as windows to her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she suspects that Daniel hasn’t told her everything. He’s hiding something – something dangerous.

What if Daniel’s version of the past isn’t actually true? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

Review:

I am so in love with this story 🙂  It is a fantastic story of possible soul-mates.  The pace of this book is alot faster and better planned than the first book.  I started reading and couldn’t put it down.  I finished it in 1 day LOL.  I’m glad I purchased the boxed set of these books so I don’t have to wait to get the next 🙂

It is a little irritating how no one will give “Luce” any answers.  If I were “Luce” I would have gotten pissed off a long time ago and left everyone involved.

I have never been able to spot something coming a mile away but I really can’t figure out where this story is going which is very exciting.

I would put these books in the same category as Hush,Hush or The Watchers Series (Lynnie Purcell).

Recommend for teens and still no language to speak of.

If I Should Die (Revenants #3) – Amy Plum

Synopsis:

Kate is devastated. Her boyfriend Vincent is a revenant who waited lifetimes to find her. But once he did their future together was shattered almost immediately. They were betrayed by their trusted ally, Violette. She killed Vincent and destroyed his body so that he could not be reanimated.

Now Vincent is doomed to roam the earth as a spirit. But Kate isn’t willing to accept life without her true love. She’ll risk anything to save him, even as Violette, their friend-turned-enemy, begins to wage a war to rule over France’s Immortals.

Review:

This was by far the best of the series, it made me love it just a little bit more.  The pace was fast in this book and the twists and turns within the story made it impossible for me to put down.  “Kate” really steps up in this book and becomes a strong character and the love story between her and “Vincent” is heartbreaking and relate-able.

I prefer series to have one long story line that flows throughout the entire series and this series does that beautifully.

I am very glad that I finished this series although I truly hope that there will be a 4th book because there were some questions left at the end even though it felt like an ending so here’s hoping!

I suggest these books for teens and young adults.  There is really very little language and very little in the way of gore.  There is killing but it is not described in great detail.

Horizon (Soul Guardians #3) – Kim Richardson

Synopsis:

Much to Kara’s horror, a horde of demons is released into the mortal world, through the Mirror of Souls. Thousands of human souls are dying every day. The Guardian Angel Legion works relentlessly at trying to secure the mortal world from Demons.

But when Kara discovers the truth behind the Demon Lord’s plans, can she return to Horizon safely and warn the Legion before it’s too late?

Review:

The best so far!  I just finished reading this one…I could not put it down.  The pace of this one is fast and even throughout the book.  Emotions run high through “Kara” inadvertently releasing demons all the way through to the epic battle of Heaven and Hell.  I don’t want to spoil anything so it’s hard to give examples.

Still a great read for teens and up…there is still explicit language and some of the descriptions of the battles can be a little gruesome.

Elemental (Soul Guardians #2) – Kim Richardson

Synopsis:

Kara is struck by lightning, dies (again) and once again ends up back in Horizon.  She accidentally hurts a fellow angel while training to use her new elemental power which gets her banished.  Her mother’s soul has been stolen by demons and Kara and her friends have to find it along with trying to save the mortal world.

Review:

I am still enjoying this series!  The author keeps up the pace with this book which holds your attention.  The plot twists are well thought out and well written.  It is definitely a page turner.

I wish though that the romance between “Kara” and “Daniel” would present itself more often than it does.  I just wish I could hear what the main characters were thinking.  I want there to be a little more passion and tension.  I am hoping since this series is so long that it will get there, I just hope it’s sooner rather than later.

Grammar and spelling still needs a little work but it doesn’t detract from the story.  The ending is a cliffhanger so be prepared to get the next book!
