Matched (Matched #1)- Ally Condie

Synopsis:

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander’s face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate… until she sees Ky Markham’s face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

The Society tells her it’s a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she’s destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can’t stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society’s infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.

Review:

I gave this 3 stars because the premise is great, it’s just the story is soooo slow.  I was expecting something along the lines of Hunger Games…not so much 😦

The characters were so “Stepford” in this…there was no emotion, not even from the “Officials”.  They never got angry at anyone even when they disobeyed.

I picked this up at the library because it had a beautiful cover.  Nothing really ever happened. About the last 3 chapters is what really had me wanting to read the next book.
The book cover boasts “tons of romance” but I didn’t see it. There was only stolen glances here and there but nothing to really make me swoon.

I understand that this series was optioned for a movie but I just don’t see how that can work. There was no action in the story to move the plot forward. It was all about the human condition. Like I said, great premise just really bad pace. I would love to have had more back story on the government and the main characters.

I will probably still finish out the series just because I can’t stand to NOT finish a series and it really is an easy read. It took me about a day and a half to finish.

I would recommend this for pre-teen and teens.   It’s an easy read.  There was no language, no sex…and as far as I can remember only 2-3 kisses.
