A Lick of Frost (Meredith Gentry #6)

Swallowing Darkenss (Meredith Gentry #7)

By Laurell K. Hamilton

Synopsis of A Lick of Frost:

I am Meredith Gentry, princess and heir apparent to the throne in the realm of faerie, onetime private investigator in the mortal world. To be crowned queen, I must first continue the royal bloodline and give birth to an heir of my own. If I fail, my aunt, Queen Andais, will be free to do what she most desires: install her twisted son, Cel, as monarch?and kill me. My royal guards surround me, and my best loved – my Darkness and my Killing Frost – are always beside me, sworn to protect and make love to me. But still the threat grows greater. For despite all my carnal efforts I remain childless, while the machinations of my sinister, sadistic Queen and her confederates remain tireless. So my bodyguards and I have slipped back into Los Angeles, hoping to outrun the gathering shadows of court intrigue. But even exile isn’t enough to escape the grasp of those with dark designs. Now King Taranis, powerful and vain-glorious ruler of faerie’s Seelie Court, has leveled accusations against my noble guards of a heinous crime – and has gone so far as to ask the mortal authorities to prosecute. If he succeeds, my men face extradition to faerie and the hideous penalties that await them there. But I know that Taranis’s charges are baseless, and I sense that his true target is me. He tried to kill me when I was a child. Now I fear his intentions are far more terrifying.

Synopsis of Swallowing Darkness:

I am Meredith, princess of faerie, wielder of the hands of Flesh and Blood, and at long last, I am with child–twins, fathered by my royal guard. Though my uncle, Taranis, King of Light and Illusion, claims that he is the true father since he abducted me from my home, betrayed, and defiled me. And now he has branded my guards as a threat to my unborn children.

Bearing an heir has placed me halfway to my aunt’s throne, that much closer to my reign over the Unseelie Court–and well ahead of her son, my cousin Cel, in this race. Now I must stay alive to see my children born and claim my place as queen.

But not all in faerie are pleased with the news, and conspirators from every court in the realm plot against me and mine. They seek to strip my guards, my lovers, from me by poisoned word or cold steel. But I still have supporters, and even friends, among the goblins and the sluagh, who will stand by me.

I am Meredith Nic Essus, and those who would defy and destroy me are destined to pay a terrible price–for I am truly my father’s daughter. To protect what is mine, I will sacrifice anything–even if it means waging a great battle against my darkest enemies and making the most momentous decision ever made as princess of faerie.

I love this series.  I love that the female lead is very strong but she doesn’t mind asking others for help or their opinions when needed. There is a lot of real world Celtic history that has gone into this series and it is very interesting to read and research on my own.  The pace of the series has been very steady throughout all books which has made it very easy to continue to read.  My favorite of these two in this post has to be “Swallowing Darkness”…everything comes to a head in that one and it is super exciting.  I think I could have been satisfied if that were the last book in the series…but alas, there is another, “Divine Misdemeanors”…I am waiting on it to be delivered as we speak.

I would recommend this to adults.  Pervasive sex, some language and lots of violence.

Books 3-5 (Meredith Gentry Series) – Laurell K. Hamilton

Synopsis of Seduced By Moonlight:

I am Meredith Gentry, P.I. and Princess Merry, heir to the throne of Fairie.
Now there are those among me who whisper I am more.
They fear me even as they protect me. And who can blame them?
I’ve awakened the dazzling magic that’s slumbered in them for
thousands of years. But the thing is, I can’t figure out why.

My aunt, the Queen of Air and Darkness, is no longer distracted by her usual sadistic hobbies. Her obsession has turned unwaveringly to me. The mission to get me pregnant and beat my cousin Prince Cel to the crown is taking longer than expected. Even though I spend each night with the Queen’s Ravens, my immortal guards, no child has come of our decadent pleasures. But something else is happening. My magic courses through me uncontrollably. And as I lock my half-mortal body with their full-Sidhe blooded ones, the power surges like never before.

It all began with the chalice. I dreamed of it, and it appeared, cool and hard, beside me when I awoke. My guards know the ancient relic well—its disappearance ages ago stripped them of their vital powers. But it is here with us now. My touch resonates with its force, and they’re consumed with it, their Sidhe essences lit up by it. But even as they cherish me for this unexpected gift, there are those who loathe me for it. Me, a mongrel, only half fey and part mortal. The Unseelie court has suffered for so long, and there are some who would not have it weakened further by an impure queen. My enemies grow in number every day. But they do not know what I am capable of. Nor, for that matter, do I. . . .

Synopsis of A Stroke of Midnight:

I am Meredith Gentry, P.I. and Princess Merry, heir to the throne of Fairie. Now there are those among me who whisper I am more. They fear me even as they protect me. And who can blame them? I’ve awakened the dazzling magic that’s slumbered in them for thousands of years. But the thing is, I can’t figure out why.

I am Meredith Gentry, P.I., solving cases in Los Angeles, far from the peril and deception of my real home–because I am also Princess Meredith, heir to the darkest throne faerie has to offer. The Unseelie Court infuses me with its power. But at what price does such magic come? How much of my human side will I have to give up, and how much of the sinister side of faerie will I have to embrace? To sit on a throne that has ruled through bloodshed and violence for centuries, I might have to become that which I dread the most.

Enemies watch my every move. My cousin Cel strives to have me killed even now from his prison cell. But not all the assassination attempts are his. Some Unseelie nobles have waited centuries for my aunt Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness, to become weak enough that she might be toppled from her throne. Enemies unforeseen move against us–enemies who would murder the least among us.

The threat will drive us to allow human police into faerie for the first time in our history. I need my allies now more than ever, especially since fate will lead me into the arm of Mistral, Master of Storms, the queen’s new captain of her guard. Our passion will reawaken powers long forgotten among the warriors of the sidhe. Pain and pleasure await me–and danger, as well, for some at that court seek only death.

I will find new joys with the butterfly-winged demi-fey. My guards and I will show all of faerie that violence and sex are as popular among the sidhe as they are among the lesser fey of our court. The Darkness will weep, and Frost will comfort him. The gentlest of my guards will find new strength and break my heart. Passions undreamed of await us–and my enemies gather, for the future of both courts of faerie begins to unravel.

Synopsis of Mistral’s Kiss:

I am Princess Meredith, heir to a throne of faerie. My day job, once upon a time, was as a private detective in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, princess has now become a full-time occupation.

My aunt, Queen Andais, will have it no other way. And so I am virtually a prisoner in faerie–trapped here with some of the realm’s most beautiful men to serve as my bodyguards . . . and my lovers. For I am compelled to conceive a child: an heir to succeed me on the throne. Yet after months of amazing sex with my consorts, there is still no baby. And no baby means no throne. The only certainty is death at the hands of my cousin Cel, or his followers, if I fail to conceive.

Now Mistral, Queen Andais’s new captain of the guard, has come to my bed–defying her and risking her terrible wrath in doing so. But even she will hesitate to punish him in jealous rage, because our joining has reawakened old magic, mystical power so ancient that no one stands against it and survives. Not even my strongest and most favored: my Darkness and my Killing Frost. Not even Mistral himself, my Storm Lord. But because Mistral has helped to bring this magic forth, he may live another day.

If I can reclaim control of the fey power that once was, there may be hope for me and my reign in faerie. I might yet quell the dark schemes and subterfuges surrounding me. Though shadows of obsession and conspiracy gather, I may survive.

I am really enjoying this series.  Ms. Hamilton’s writting style is very easy to read.  It has been very well planned out and I don’t feel like there have been any holes to the plot, at least not that I can remember.  There is so much that happens so it’s really hard to know if you have missed something or if something hasn’t been answered.  I can only say that nothing BIG has been overlooked.

The only problem I have had so far is that there are sooooo many people involved that I have a hard time keeping straight who is who.  On the flip side, each character is well developed and very easy to fall for.  It would be hard for me to pick a favorite.

This series has everything from romance and sex to murder and mystery as well as Celtic heritage.

It is a dark series in that there is torture, domination, power and somethings that go bump in the night.

I love how the author has combined the “real” world with the “fae” world and made them so completely different, from the way the politics have been handled to the perception of love/sex/power between the two worlds.

I can’t wait until I get the next 3 books in the mail.  I am completely hooked on this series.

Recommended for adults: There is pervasive sex and some language and violence.

On Dublin Street (On Dublin Street #1) – Samantha Young

Four years ago, Jocelyn left her tragic past behind in the States and started over in Scotland, burying her grief, ignoring her demons, and forging ahead without attachments. Her solitary life is working well—until she moves into a new apartment on Dublin Street where she meets a man who shakes her carefully guarded world to its core.

Braden Carmichael is used to getting what he wants, and he’s determined to get Jocelyn into his bed. Knowing how skittish she is about entering a relationship, Braden proposes an arrangement that will satisfy their intense attraction without any strings attached.

But after an intrigued Jocelyn accepts, she realizes that Braden won’t be satisfied with just mind-blowing passion. The stubborn Scotsman is intent on truly knowing her… down to the very soul.

I enjoyed this book.  It is a little slow and anti-climactic but the story is good.  It kind of reminded me of Fifty Shades only insofar as one main character has intimacy/trust issues and the other tries to help, age difference, there’s an “agreement” to how the relationship will work and he’s rich and powerful.  There are several parallels to Fifty Shades.

Both characters are very relate-able and easy to fall for, especially “Braden”.  He is a very sexy character (to me anyway).

The writing kind of felt like I was reading a diary.  The tenses switched every now and then which made it felt like someone writing in a journal.  I kind of liked it that way.

The only thing I could complain about would be that it took entirely too long for the 2 main characters to come together.

It is a very easy read, I finished it in one day.

I would recommend this for adults who like romance.  There is a lot of language and descriptive sex situations.

Covet (Novel of the Fallen Angels #1)- J.R Ward

Redemption isn’t a word Jim Heron knows much about-his specialty is revenge, and to him, sin is all relative. But everything changes when he becomes a fallen angel and is charged with saving the souls of seven people from the seven deadly sins. And failure is not an option.

Vin DiPietro long ago sold his soul to his business, and he’s good with that-until fate intervenes in the form of a tough-talking, Harley-riding, self-professed savior. And then he meets a woman who will make him question his destiny, his sanity, and his heart-and he has to work with a fallen angel to win her over and redeem his own soul.

I really enjoyed this book.  I thought that the storyline was original and well thought out.  There were only a couple things that I wish were different: 1.  It took me over 40 pages to get into it and I really had to push myself, but once I did, I was hooked.  2.  There really wasn’t any clear descriptions of the characters (if there was, I totally missed it) which made it very hard to picture anyone.

Keep in mind this is only the first book so I am only going off what I have read so far…the formula for this SEEMS to be that each book will be a new set of characters, except for the main fallen angels and demons.  I don’t know how I feel about that since you spend an entire book falling for the “victim/s”, for lack of a better word, only to leave them behind in the end.

It is a relatively fast paced book which makes it an easy read although it is long (at least to me it was…it took me 2 days to finish), 482 pages.

I would recommend to adults who like paranormal/fallen angel/supernatural romance books.  There is pervasive language and sex.

Wicked Fate (Wicked #1) – Tabatha Vargo

What if you lived in fear of yourself?

For Mage McPherson being afraid of herself is just the norm. Thanks to that fear, being a loner in a small town never bothered the mysterious Mage. Once she received her secret abilities, she figured being alone was the safest way to be. That all changes during her sophomore year at Summerville High when Adam, her equally mysterious secret crush, starts to notice her.

Afraid that she might harm Adam, Mage must learn to either control or deny herself. With Adam by her side she’s more powerful than she’s ever been, but is she powerful enough to defeat her worst nightmare? She learns a hard lesson about love and magic when her destiny comes to collect.

I received a copy of this book from the author because I won a Goodreads giveaway 🙂  I am so glad I entered because I loved this book and can’t wait for the 2nd!  I had received it a month or so ago but I have so many books to read I didn’t pick it up until today (9-03-13).  I got this one read in one day 🙂  I didn’t want to put it down!

In the beginning I had a hard time releating to “Mage” because she was a loner and misfit but the more I read the more I liked her.  I easily fell for her love interest “Adam” because he was a very caring and romantic person and it did not come across as sappy.  I could easily see the attraction and passion between them.

It is a little slow to start but that was ok, the story picks up and keeps your attention.  There is ALOT of inner dialogue from “Mage” which can kinda make you feel like the story is not moving but it’s not too bad.  I wish the 2nd book was already out but to my dismay it is not.

The only thing I really wish is that there was more background information given.

I would recommend this for teens and young adults…there is a little language but not overly done.  There is no sex although it is hinted at.

Fifty Shades of Grey- E. L James

When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

I know what you’re gonna say…”Why the hell would you read that?”  Well, believe me I didn’t want to but one of my friends made me.  She had me read them about a year ago and I think I have read them 6 times since.  I really enjoyed reading this series and have found myself wishing for the same type of unconditional love and passion, minus all the drama-I hate real life drama.

I am in no way saying these books are superbly written but they are a fantastic way to entertain.  I know nothing of the BDSM lifestyle so I have no way of knowing if anything in these books is factually accurate or not.  I am so not usually interested in the whole erotica/mommy porn/ect. genre but I have to say that I fell in love with the whole “damaged guy falls for innocent girl”.  What girl hasn’t dreamed of having that kind of power over someone (even if she is a little stand-offish about PDA’s and emotional expression).

I personally could have done without all the sex (I am not close minded or a prude) but I understand why it’s there.  I just loved the simple story of a broken boy being falling helplessly for a simple girl next door type who gets under his skin enough to break down his guard.

I did love the fact that the entire 3 books were a build up for the climax, no pun intended.  I like that formula, it makes you keep reading until the end.  I have read too many books that climaxed way to early which by the end of the series made you feel cheated or that you wasted your time because you could have stopped in the middle of the series because the most exciting things had already happened.

The writing in these books is not the best and like I said before, it’s purely for entertainment purposes.

Recommended for adult women, there is lots of language and detailed sex situations.

Torrent (River of Time #3) – Lisa T. Bergren

Gabi and Lia Betarrini have learned to control their time travel, and they return from medieval Italy to save their father from his tragic death in modern times.
But love calls across the centuries, and the girls are determined to return forever—even though they know the Black Plague is advancing across Europe, claiming the lives of one-third of the population. In the suspenseful conclusion of the River of Time series, every decision is about life … and death.
I am in love with this series.  I would recommend this to ANYONE.  There is action, romance, betrayal.  The way the author meshed the present with the past in the form of the words they use and the actions they portray was perfect.
The love story between “Gabi” and “Marcello” made me wish for the days of chivalry.  I am not a touchy feely/ PDA type person but the interaction between makes you dream of that kind of relationship.
I think this book probably had the fastest pace of the 3.  I got through this one in half a day.  I just could not put it down.
I got all three books from the library but I can promise you that I WILL own these and re-read them from time to time.
There was no language, a little sex (after marriage) but it’s not graphic just implied. Some of the battle scenes can be graphic but it’s not too bad.
