Soul Screamers Series #1-7 – Rachel Vincent

Synopsis of Each Book:

#1 My Soul To Take:

She doesn’t see dead people. She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who’ll be next.

#2 My Soul To Save:

When Kaylee Cavanaugh screams, someone dies.

So when teen pop star Eden croaks onstage and Kaylee doesn’t wail, she knows something is dead wrong. She can’t cry for someone who has no soul.

The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad’s ironclad curfew and putting her too-hot-to-be-real boyfriend’s loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls: a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld—a consequence they can’t possibly understand.

Kaylee can’t let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk..

#3 My Soul To Keep:

Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.

Until something does.

Demon breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked.

And so is someone else…

#4 My Soul To Steal:

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can’t just pretend nothing happened. But “complicated” doesn’t even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn’t just an ordinary girl. She’s a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people’s fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn’t above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

#5 If I Die:

The entire school’s talking about the gorgeous new math teacher, Mr. Beck. Everyone except Kaylee Cavanaugh. After all, Kaylee’s no ordinary high-school junior. She’s a banshee—she screams when someone dies.

But the next scream might be for Kaylee.

Yeah—it’s a shock to her, too. So to distract herself, Kaylee’s going to save every girl in school. Because that hot new teacher is really an incubus who feeds on the desire of unsuspecting students. The only girls immune to his lure are Kaylee and Sabine, her boyfriend’s needy ex-girlfriend. Now the unlikely allies have to get rid of Mr. Beck…before he discovers they aren’t quite human, either.

But Kaylee’s borrowed lifeline is nearing its end. And those who care about her will do anything to save her life.

Anything.

#6 Before I Wake:

I died on a Thursday, killed by a monster intent on stealing my soul.

The good news? He didn’t get it.

The bad news? Turns out not even death will get you out of high schoolÂ…

Covering up her own murder was one thing, but faking life is much harder than Kaylee Cavanaugh expected. After weeks spent “recovering,” she’s back in school, fighting to stay visible to the human world, struggling to fit in with her friends and planning time alone with her new reaper boyfriend.

But to earn her keep in the human world, Kaylee must reclaim stolen souls, and when her first assignment brings her face-to-face with an old foe, she knows the game has changed. Her immortal status won’t keep her safe. And this time Kaylee isn’t just gambling with her own lifeÂ….

#7 With All My Soul:

What does it mean when your school is voted the most dangerous in America? It’s time to kick some hellion butt…

After not really surviving her junior year (does “undead” count as survival?), Kaylee Cavanaugh has vowed to take back her school from the hellions causing all the trouble. She’s going to find a way to turn the incarnations of Avarice, Envy and Vanity against one another in order to protect her friends and finish this war, once and forever.

But then she meets Wrath and understands that she’s closer to the edge than she’s ever been. And when one more person close to her is taken, Kaylee realizes she can’t save everyone she loves without risking everything she has..

REVIEW:

I really enjoyed this series.  It was fast paced enough to keep your attention and the story didn’t suffer.  I felt like it was very well planned out and really enjoyed how each book was a continuation of the overall storyline.  It felt like everything that happened, happened to further the story…it never felt like it was just another “episode” of a TV show (if that makes sense).

I liked the main character “Kaylee”, she was very stubborn and independent and that is always refreshing.  “Tod” was dark, somewhat demented and selfless, he was probably my favorite character.  I could not get enough of him.  “Kaylee’s” group of friends were very diverse and well created, they were very easy to imagine and also either love or hate.

Here are some of the cons of the book: 1. the plot is somewhat guessable which is ok with me but just thought you should know 🙂  2. the world is very limited and there was very little thought placed into the imagining of it. 3.  Some of “Kaylee’s” questions/reactions leave you thinking “really???”

But all in all I think the story was original Bean Sidhes *pronounced Banshee, Reapers, Demons, psychic parasites, ect.

I could not put these books down, thank goodness I had ordered them all at the same time!

It is a very easy read, I think I got all 7 books done in 2 weeks.  These books are not meant to be intellectual they are simply meant to entertain and they certainly did for me!

Recommended for teens and young adults, there was some language but not much and there were some sexual situations but nothing that was explained in detail.

Hereafter Review:

I would give this 3 1/2 stars. It was a little depressing but the storyline was original albeit a little guess-able.
I could not identify with the main character, she rarely showed enough emotion for me which left me without a sense of her personality. It was a little cold.
I still don’t understand “why” there was such a connection to “Joshua”, why could she touch him for the first time when they were in the water. I guess I need to keep reading to find out 🙂

This book left me with more questions than it answered.  Thank goodness the other books have been released LOL

The pace was a little slow and the conflict felt forced. I never felt a true sense of danger until the end.

Arise Review:

I thought this was a much better planned book than the first one (which was a little slowly paced).
I enjoyed the New Orleans setting very much and the infusion of Voodoo traditions and religion.

The new characters introduced were easy to accept and identify with.

Each situation that changed throughout the story were needed and propelled the story forward.

I am enjoying this series and it seems original to me. I haven’t read anything like it anyway.

I would give this series a shot you may just enjoy yourself!

Elegy Review:

I absolutely loved this book although it is bitter sweet. I don’t want to give anything away and I may be alone in this but I did not see the end coming.

This book had a much faster pace and about 1/4 of the way through I could not put it down. I had to know what was going to happen.

I loved that you were able to see the growth of the characters throughout this series. “Amelia” went from sleepy to tiger, “Joshua” went from easy going to passionate (in more ways than one) and “Jillian” went from egotistical to compassionate and fierce.

I am sad that this journey is over especially the way it’s over but still it is a fantastic love story.

Paranormalcy (Paranormalcy #1) – Kiersten White

Synopsis:

Evie’s always thought of herself as a normal teenager, even though she works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormal glamours.

But Evie’s about to realize that she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

Review:

This should actaully be 3 1/2 stars. It got a little irritating how juvenile it came across. The characters were supposed to be teenagers but they read like they were 12.

The story however was enjoyable. I liked the storyline, I can’t remember reading anything like it.

The pace of the book was a little slow for me, it just seemed like the same things over and over but it didn’t cause me to have to put it down because of boredom or anything so I’d call that a win.

I wish there had been a little more passion or forbbiden-ness to the relationship of “Lend” and “Evie”.  There really is no controversy or danger, as of right now, to their so called relationship.  Actually there really isn’t a feeling of real connection between the two either.

The only character that I enjoyed reading was “Reth”…he is a mysterious, dark and dangerous faery who’s agenda is not really known and you can’t tell if he’s a good guy or bad guy yet.

But overall I enjoyed myself and I guess that is what reading is all about!

I would recommend for teens, there was no language that I can remember and no sexual situations.

Accidentally in Love With…A God? – Mimi Jean Pamiloff

Synopsis:

Twenty-two-year-old Emma Keane has a secret friend. He’s powerful, mysterious, and devastatingly handsome. In her dreams, anyway.

In real life, he’s an enigma. Maybe just a teensie jealous. Definitely overbearing. He’s also a voice only she can hear.

So who or what is he? He won’t say. But if she wants to be free, to be normal, Emma will have to trek to the jungles once ruled by the Mayans and find the forgotten ruin holding the answers.

However, the ruthless deity she’s about to unknowingly unleash on the modern world might not be so easily extracted from her life. Bottom line, he’s got enemies, and now, so does she.

Review:

I loved this book!  It is hilarious and it made me LOL several times.  This book is full of passion whether it be from angry flirting or all out fighting or just plain sexual tension.  The main character “Emma” is super stubborn and sarcastic and she is great with the one-line comebacks and name calling.  She is a strong female character which I enjoy.  “Guy” is overbearing and egotistical but it works for him and gives him an un-attainable aire about him.

The pace of the book is fast and kept me reading, I couldn’t put it down.  There is backstory thrown in to help you understand why things ended up the way they did in the present and I found that very helpful and imformative.  I personally like flashbacks because it has always made me feel like I was being “shown” the past instead of someone just telling me it happened (if that makes sense).

I would recommend this for young adults and up…there is language and lots of sexual situations.

Together, they can face anything.

But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on?

And will they even be together?

Review:

I know I have said this before but I LOVE THIS SERIES!  I was going to say that I liked this one better than the previous books but that would be a lie…I can’t pick a favorite, they are all fantastic!

I did take me a little bit to get back into the swing of the story because some of it can be a little reptitive but it wasn’t too bad.   The story pretty much picks up where the 3rd book left off.  I love how you get “Katy” and “Daemon’s” POVs alterenating between each chapter.  I like feeling like I know both sides of the story.

This passion in this book is fantastic and spicy and the snarky and humorous back and forth between the two characters is very entertaining.

It is full of passion, betrayal, lust, love, humor and mystery.  You will find friends who aren’t really friends, enemies who aren’t really enemies and strangers who you have no idea whether they should trust or not.

I would recommend this for older teens and young adults and adults.  There is some language and some sex scenes (not overly graphic though).

A Lick of Frost (Meredith Gentry #6)

Swallowing Darkenss (Meredith Gentry #7)

By Laurell K. Hamilton

Synopsis of A Lick of Frost:

I am Meredith Gentry, princess and heir apparent to the throne in the realm of faerie, onetime private investigator in the mortal world. To be crowned queen, I must first continue the royal bloodline and give birth to an heir of my own. If I fail, my aunt, Queen Andais, will be free to do what she most desires: install her twisted son, Cel, as monarch?and kill me. My royal guards surround me, and my best loved – my Darkness and my Killing Frost – are always beside me, sworn to protect and make love to me. But still the threat grows greater. For despite all my carnal efforts I remain childless, while the machinations of my sinister, sadistic Queen and her confederates remain tireless. So my bodyguards and I have slipped back into Los Angeles, hoping to outrun the gathering shadows of court intrigue. But even exile isn’t enough to escape the grasp of those with dark designs. Now King Taranis, powerful and vain-glorious ruler of faerie’s Seelie Court, has leveled accusations against my noble guards of a heinous crime – and has gone so far as to ask the mortal authorities to prosecute. If he succeeds, my men face extradition to faerie and the hideous penalties that await them there. But I know that Taranis’s charges are baseless, and I sense that his true target is me. He tried to kill me when I was a child. Now I fear his intentions are far more terrifying.

Synopsis of Swallowing Darkness:

I am Meredith, princess of faerie, wielder of the hands of Flesh and Blood, and at long last, I am with child–twins, fathered by my royal guard. Though my uncle, Taranis, King of Light and Illusion, claims that he is the true father since he abducted me from my home, betrayed, and defiled me. And now he has branded my guards as a threat to my unborn children.

Bearing an heir has placed me halfway to my aunt’s throne, that much closer to my reign over the Unseelie Court–and well ahead of her son, my cousin Cel, in this race. Now I must stay alive to see my children born and claim my place as queen.

But not all in faerie are pleased with the news, and conspirators from every court in the realm plot against me and mine. They seek to strip my guards, my lovers, from me by poisoned word or cold steel. But I still have supporters, and even friends, among the goblins and the sluagh, who will stand by me.

I am Meredith Nic Essus, and those who would defy and destroy me are destined to pay a terrible price–for I am truly my father’s daughter. To protect what is mine, I will sacrifice anything–even if it means waging a great battle against my darkest enemies and making the most momentous decision ever made as princess of faerie.

Reviews:

I love this series.  I love that the female lead is very strong but she doesn’t mind asking others for help or their opinions when needed. There is a lot of real world Celtic history that has gone into this series and it is very interesting to read and research on my own.  The pace of the series has been very steady throughout all books which has made it very easy to continue to read.  My favorite of these two in this post has to be “Swallowing Darkness”…everything comes to a head in that one and it is super exciting.  I think I could have been satisfied if that were the last book in the series…but alas, there is another, “Divine Misdemeanors”…I am waiting on it to be delivered as we speak.

I would recommend this to adults.  Pervasive sex, some language and lots of violence.

Books 3-5 (Meredith Gentry Series) – Laurell K. Hamilton

Synopsis of Seduced By Moonlight:

I am Meredith Gentry, P.I. and Princess Merry, heir to the throne of Fairie.
Now there are those among me who whisper I am more.
They fear me even as they protect me. And who can blame them?
I’ve awakened the dazzling magic that’s slumbered in them for
thousands of years. But the thing is, I can’t figure out why.

My aunt, the Queen of Air and Darkness, is no longer distracted by her usual sadistic hobbies. Her obsession has turned unwaveringly to me. The mission to get me pregnant and beat my cousin Prince Cel to the crown is taking longer than expected. Even though I spend each night with the Queen’s Ravens, my immortal guards, no child has come of our decadent pleasures. But something else is happening. My magic courses through me uncontrollably. And as I lock my half-mortal body with their full-Sidhe blooded ones, the power surges like never before.

It all began with the chalice. I dreamed of it, and it appeared, cool and hard, beside me when I awoke. My guards know the ancient relic well—its disappearance ages ago stripped them of their vital powers. But it is here with us now. My touch resonates with its force, and they’re consumed with it, their Sidhe essences lit up by it. But even as they cherish me for this unexpected gift, there are those who loathe me for it. Me, a mongrel, only half fey and part mortal. The Unseelie court has suffered for so long, and there are some who would not have it weakened further by an impure queen. My enemies grow in number every day. But they do not know what I am capable of. Nor, for that matter, do I. . . .

Synopsis of A Stroke of Midnight:

I am Meredith Gentry, P.I. and Princess Merry, heir to the throne of Fairie. Now there are those among me who whisper I am more. They fear me even as they protect me. And who can blame them? I’ve awakened the dazzling magic that’s slumbered in them for thousands of years. But the thing is, I can’t figure out why.

I am Meredith Gentry, P.I., solving cases in Los Angeles, far from the peril and deception of my real home–because I am also Princess Meredith, heir to the darkest throne faerie has to offer. The Unseelie Court infuses me with its power. But at what price does such magic come? How much of my human side will I have to give up, and how much of the sinister side of faerie will I have to embrace? To sit on a throne that has ruled through bloodshed and violence for centuries, I might have to become that which I dread the most.

Enemies watch my every move. My cousin Cel strives to have me killed even now from his prison cell. But not all the assassination attempts are his. Some Unseelie nobles have waited centuries for my aunt Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness, to become weak enough that she might be toppled from her throne. Enemies unforeseen move against us–enemies who would murder the least among us.

The threat will drive us to allow human police into faerie for the first time in our history. I need my allies now more than ever, especially since fate will lead me into the arm of Mistral, Master of Storms, the queen’s new captain of her guard. Our passion will reawaken powers long forgotten among the warriors of the sidhe. Pain and pleasure await me–and danger, as well, for some at that court seek only death.

I will find new joys with the butterfly-winged demi-fey. My guards and I will show all of faerie that violence and sex are as popular among the sidhe as they are among the lesser fey of our court. The Darkness will weep, and Frost will comfort him. The gentlest of my guards will find new strength and break my heart. Passions undreamed of await us–and my enemies gather, for the future of both courts of faerie begins to unravel.

Synopsis of Mistral’s Kiss:

I am Princess Meredith, heir to a throne of faerie. My day job, once upon a time, was as a private detective in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, princess has now become a full-time occupation.

My aunt, Queen Andais, will have it no other way. And so I am virtually a prisoner in faerie–trapped here with some of the realm’s most beautiful men to serve as my bodyguards . . . and my lovers. For I am compelled to conceive a child: an heir to succeed me on the throne. Yet after months of amazing sex with my consorts, there is still no baby. And no baby means no throne. The only certainty is death at the hands of my cousin Cel, or his followers, if I fail to conceive.

Now Mistral, Queen Andais’s new captain of the guard, has come to my bed–defying her and risking her terrible wrath in doing so. But even she will hesitate to punish him in jealous rage, because our joining has reawakened old magic, mystical power so ancient that no one stands against it and survives. Not even my strongest and most favored: my Darkness and my Killing Frost. Not even Mistral himself, my Storm Lord. But because Mistral has helped to bring this magic forth, he may live another day.

If I can reclaim control of the fey power that once was, there may be hope for me and my reign in faerie. I might yet quell the dark schemes and subterfuges surrounding me. Though shadows of obsession and conspiracy gather, I may survive.

Reviews:

I am really enjoying this series.  Ms. Hamilton’s writting style is very easy to read.  It has been very well planned out and I don’t feel like there have been any holes to the plot, at least not that I can remember.  There is so much that happens so it’s really hard to know if you have missed something or if something hasn’t been answered.  I can only say that nothing BIG has been overlooked.

The only problem I have had so far is that there are sooooo many people involved that I have a hard time keeping straight who is who.  On the flip side, each character is well developed and very easy to fall for.  It would be hard for me to pick a favorite.

This series has everything from romance and sex to murder and mystery as well as Celtic heritage.

It is a dark series in that there is torture, domination, power and somethings that go bump in the night.

I love how the author has combined the “real” world with the “fae” world and made them so completely different, from the way the politics have been handled to the perception of love/sex/power between the two worlds.

I can’t wait until I get the next 3 books in the mail.  I am completely hooked on this series.

Recommended for adults: There is pervasive sex and some language and violence.
