Fiend by Peter Stenson

Synopsis:

When Chase Daniels first sees the little girl in umbrella socks tearing open the Rottweiler, he’s not too concerned. As a longtime meth addict, he’s no stranger to horrifying, drug-fueled hallucinations.
But as he and his fellow junkies soon discover, the little girl is no illusion. The end of the world really has arrived.
The funny thing is, Chase’s life was over long before the apocalypse got here, his existence already reduced to a stinking basement apartment and a filthy mattress and an endless grind of buying and selling and using. He’s lied and cheated and stolen and broken his parents’ hearts a thousand times. And he threw away his only shot at sobriety a long time ago, when he chose the embrace of the drug over the woman he still loves.
And if your life’s already shattered beyond any normal hopes of redemption…well, maybe the end of the world is an opportunity. Maybe it’s a last chance for Chase to hit restart and become the man he once dreamed of being. Soon he’s fighting to reconnect with his lost love and dreaming of becoming her hero among civilization’s ruins.
But is salvation just another pipe dream?

Review:

This book is a gritty Breaking Bad meets Walking Dead.

It is extremely well written and very dark and dirty.

The story can be slow in some parts and a little depressing but it is very original.  I believe I read this one within 2 days.  Who knew a taboo drug would be a life saver.

It’s not that the meth has been glamorized in this book but it definitely feels like it is it’s own character.  It has a place in this world and with these characters.

I am not quiet sure how I feel about the ending.  On one hand, I didn’t see it coming and that is always a good surprise and on the other, how could he do that?!

There’s a 50 % chance that I’d re-read this book but probably not until years later.

There is quiet a bit of language and sex.  I would definitely recommend this to adults!

Review:

Ok. I know a lot of people will probably feed me to the wolves for this but…

These books were just okay.  Don’t get me wrong, the storyline was great…it was the execution that left a lot to be desired.

The characters were very flat to me.  I didn’t fall in love with any of them.  If I had to pick one though I would have to say I liked Newt the most.  I felt really bad for him.

The pace of the book was slow and drawn out to me.  Dashner is very long winded.  It took me forever to get through them.  I would put them down for days on end and not be motivated to pick them back up.  I kinda had to force myself to read them.  It was disappointing to say the least.

I wanted it to be like the Hunger Games but it just wasn’t fleshed out enough to get it there.

The made-up-word-profanity drove me insane.  They were silly words.  They didn’t convey the emotion of the words AT ALL.  When I read the words I automatically replaced them in my head with the real word.  I mean, come on, “Shuck-face?!” who says that???

I think the thing that bothers me the most was the ending…Jesus, WTF.  I didn’t get it at all!  It left so many questions lingering.

Overall, it was just okay. It’s not something I would ever pick-up again and re-read.

I can’t believe I’m gonna say this but….the movies were better.

I don’t remember any real bad language, just the silly made up words.  I would recommend this for pre-teen and teens.

It has been awhile since I have posted anything…like 2 years.  A lot has happened in the last two years that have taken me away from my reviews.  I have divorced and found my forever love and continued to raise a 9 year old (Piper) and created a brand new life (1 year old Zelda).  I have worked and slacked and created art.  I have purchased a new home and lost loved ones and made new friends.

It has been a very busy couple of years.  I wouldn’t trade it for mithril.

I NEVER stopped reading, no matter what has gone on in my life.  For me, to stop reading would be to stop breathing.

I have read so many things and I hope that I can get the reviews up here for you to enjoy!  It may take awhile but I’m not going anywhere… unless it’s to Middle Earth or The Scorch or traveling the galaxy with Rho.

Stay Tuned!!

Sorry it has been awhile since I have posted but I wanted to wait until I had read the whole series before giving my reviews 🙂

Soul Screamers Series #1-7 – Rachel Vincent

Synopsis of Each Book:

#1 My Soul To Take:

She doesn’t see dead people. She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who’ll be next.

#2 My Soul To Save:

When Kaylee Cavanaugh screams, someone dies.

So when teen pop star Eden croaks onstage and Kaylee doesn’t wail, she knows something is dead wrong. She can’t cry for someone who has no soul.

The last thing Kaylee needs right now is to be skipping school, breaking her dad’s ironclad curfew and putting her too-hot-to-be-real boyfriend’s loyalty to the test. But starry-eyed teens are trading their souls: a flickering lifetime of fame and fortune in exchange for eternity in the Netherworld—a consequence they can’t possibly understand.

Kaylee can’t let that happen, even if trying to save their souls means putting her own at risk..

#3 My Soul To Keep:

Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.

Until something does.

Demon breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked.

And so is someone else…

#4 My Soul To Steal:

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can’t just pretend nothing happened. But “complicated” doesn’t even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn’t just an ordinary girl. She’s a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people’s fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn’t above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

#5 If I Die:

The entire school’s talking about the gorgeous new math teacher, Mr. Beck. Everyone except Kaylee Cavanaugh. After all, Kaylee’s no ordinary high-school junior. She’s a banshee—she screams when someone dies.

But the next scream might be for Kaylee.

Yeah—it’s a shock to her, too. So to distract herself, Kaylee’s going to save every girl in school. Because that hot new teacher is really an incubus who feeds on the desire of unsuspecting students. The only girls immune to his lure are Kaylee and Sabine, her boyfriend’s needy ex-girlfriend. Now the unlikely allies have to get rid of Mr. Beck…before he discovers they aren’t quite human, either.

But Kaylee’s borrowed lifeline is nearing its end. And those who care about her will do anything to save her life.

Anything.

#6 Before I Wake:

I died on a Thursday, killed by a monster intent on stealing my soul.

The good news? He didn’t get it.

The bad news? Turns out not even death will get you out of high school…

Covering up her own murder was one thing, but faking life is much harder than Kaylee Cavanaugh expected. After weeks spent “recovering,” she’s back in school, fighting to stay visible to the human world, struggling to fit in with her friends and planning time alone with her new reaper boyfriend.

But to earn her keep in the human world, Kaylee must reclaim stolen souls, and when her first assignment brings her face-to-face with an old foe, she knows the game has changed. Her immortal status won’t keep her safe. And this time Kaylee isn’t just gambling with her own life….

#7 With All My Soul:

What does it mean when your school is voted the most dangerous in America? It’s time to kick some hellion butt…

After not really surviving her junior year (does “undead” count as survival?), Kaylee Cavanaugh has vowed to take back her school from the hellions causing all the trouble. She’s going to find a way to turn the incarnations of Avarice, Envy and Vanity against one another in order to protect her friends and finish this war, once and forever.

But then she meets Wrath and understands that she’s closer to the edge than she’s ever been. And when one more person close to her is taken, Kaylee realizes she can’t save everyone she loves without risking everything she has..

REVIEW:

I really enjoyed this series.  It was fast paced enough to keep your attention and the story didn’t suffer.  I felt like it was very well planned out and really enjoyed how each book was a continuation of the overall storyline.  It felt like everything that happened, happened to further the story…it never felt like it was just another “episode” of a TV show (if that makes sense).

I liked the main character “Kaylee”, she was very stubborn and independent and that is always refreshing.  “Tod” was dark, somewhat demented and selfless, he was probably my favorite character.  I could not get enough of him.  “Kaylee’s” group of friends were very diverse and well created, they were very easy to imagine and also either love or hate.

Here are some of the cons of the book: 1. the plot is somewhat guessable which is ok with me but just thought you should know 🙂  2. the world is very limited and there was very little thought placed into the imagining of it. 3.  Some of “Kaylee’s” questions/reactions leave you thinking “really???”

But all in all I think the story was original Bean Sidhes *pronounced Banshee, Reapers, Demons, psychic parasites, ect.

I could not put these books down, thank goodness I had ordered them all at the same time!

It is a very easy read, I think I got all 7 books done in 2 weeks.  These books are not meant to be intellectual they are simply meant to entertain and they certainly did for me!

Recommended for teens and young adults, there was some language but not much and there were some sexual situations but nothing that was explained in detail.

Review:

I really enjoyed this book.  I can’t remember reading anything like it before.  It contains Irish folklore and myth with does allow for fleshed out explanations.

It is a a very easy read.  I read it in about 6 hours.  I found it to be very light…meaning there wasn’t a whole lot of back-story or imagery which was fine with me, that is what I was looking for when I picked this up.

The characters were kind of 1 dimensional but I still liked them.  I think “Tod” was my favorite and I hope to see him more in the rest of the series.  Each character is very different you have the stuck up egotistical cousin, the hot jock guy, the girl who doesn’t think she’s beautiful and the best friend who sticks it out and believes.

I did like how “Kaylee” was lied to but when she confronted the person about it they told her the truth.  That is always a pet peeve of mine that a lie can go on throughout an entire book book before someone gives up and spills the beans.  Especially when, you as a reader, know everything that goes on in the book, it can be very irritating.  I never understood that.

Review:

This book has gotten VERY mixed reviews but here is my take…
I loved it and found it to be a very “tame” relative of The Devil’s Advocate with a little early Buffy thrown in.

This first book is very description heavy and can be a little slow and repetitive but it was worth it. I thought it was worth the patience and besides that I love story rich books.
The author is very good at descriptions and making you feel like you know EXACTLY what something or someone looks like.  It is a dark, mysterious and dangerous story.

I felt like the story was very wall thought out and paced relatively well.

I think “Haven” showed great growth throughout the book as well as her friends.
I absolutely fell for “Lance” and the description that he is a Clark Kent type. I am still not sure how I feel about “Lucian”.

The skill in imagery she used added a lot of depth which was fantastic.

I would love to see this brought to screen. If they could do it in imagery heavy Devil’s Advocate they could certainly do it with this book and in this day and age they could make it beautifully dark and somewhat whimsical.

I would recommend for teens and up…I don’t remember any language and there was no sex.
